Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered presents the most recent research on American illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1911), with thematic essays by leading scholars in art history, history, and literature. The richly illustrated book presents a fresh perspective on Pyle’s familiar images by exploring his interaction with the art and culture of his time, effectively repositioning him within the broader spectrum of nineteenth-century art.

James Gurney’s Chapter 1 essay “Pyle as a Picturemaker” explores in detail Mr. Pyle’s methods and philosophies, including preliminary sketches, principles of composition, and use of models. Other essays explore Pyle’s relationship with Swedenborgianism, his teaching methods, and his development of the pirate archetype.

Written and illustrated by James Gurney

In 1860, when uncharted territories still exist on the globe, scientist Arthur Denison and his young son, Will, embark on a voyage of exploration. In the middle of the ocean, a terrible storm wrecks their ship and they find themselves washed up on a mysterious island called Dinotopia, where humans and dinosaurs have coexisted for thousands of years.

In his illustrated journal, Professor Denison records the architecture, biology, and social life of this unknown island in meticulous detail. He describes hatcheries where humans care for baby dinosaurs, armored caravans which venture into the realm of the T. rex, and a select group of pilots who fly aboard the gigantic pterosaurs.

Beloved by a generation of readers, James Gurney’s original illustrated story returns in this unabridged 20th anniversary volume from Calla Editions™. The artwork has been reproduced from new plates digitally scanned from the original transparencies. This expanded edition includes 32 additional pages, including a new foreword by literary historian Michael Patrick Hearn and an afterword by the author with over 45 behind-the-scenes sketches and photos.

Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara is a stand-alone sequel to the first two Dinotopia books, and a good introduction to the world for readers of all ages.

Professor Denison and his saurian companion, Bix, set out on a perilous journey to the long-forgotten empire of Chandara. When their personal invitation from the emperor goes missing, they are forced to cross the border penniless and in disguise. Every step of the way, Denison documents in exquisite detail the creatures, characters, and architecture he encounters.

Mark Norell of the American Museum of Natural History says, “Mr. Gurney aptly weaves science, art, and imagination into a beautiful book certain to become a classic.
