Painting with just three colors plus white opens up exciting horizons for both beginning and experienced painters. It’s a great way to become familiar with unusual pigments and how they combine with others. It’s also a powerful way to achieve a unified and harmonious effect.
In this video workshop, James Gurney begins with a colorful still life that tests the limits of what can be mixed from a small set of basic colors. He then paints a couple of gray scenes, demonstrating how to neutralize mixtures.
The video includes practical studio exercises that everyone can try, such as the “Triad Test” and the “Eight Gray Test” followed by plein-air paintings that put the principles in action. He uses gouache, watercolor, and casein, but the painting insights are universal and will benefit oil and acrylic painters as well.
"TRIADS: Painting with Three Colors takes the seemingly simple concept of painting with three color palettes and through it opens a window into a range of concepts of value to students of painting." —Charley Parker, Lines and Colors
